192 Kasha from Smolensk groats

Kasha iz smolenskikh krup


  • glasses (½ lb) Smolensk groats
  • salt
  • (nutmeg for those who like it)


Bring water to a boil and add salt. Sprinkle on glass of Smolensk groats to make a moderately thick kasha. Add nutmeg, if desired. Turn onto a plate, smooth down, and let cool. Cut into small cubes like croutons, dumplings (Iazanki) or half-moons. Just before serving, drop into the bouillon.
