Method

Gather rosebuds that are just blossoming, cut off [and discard] the white ends of the petals, and pour the petals into a carboy. Add enough thrice-distilled vodka just to cover the petals. Set the carboy in the sun for 3 days, pour off the vodka, and pour it over fresh rose petals. Repeat 3 times. Strain thoroughly. To heighten the color, add several drops vitriol, but take great care because vitriol turns the liqueur acid and readily causes it to overflow. Therefore, after every drop of vitriol, shake [the liqueur] and observe the color. If color is sufficiently pink, do not add any more vitriol. Dilute ¼ pail of this vodka with a syrup prepared from 6–9 glasses rosewater and 6 lbs sugar.
