When buying a coconut, hold it close to your ear and give it a shake. You should hear a faint sloshing sound that indicates there is some liquid inside. If you don’ t, the nut is probably a bit too old. To open a coconut: first, hold it loosely in one hand and give the shell repeated hard taps with a hammer or the back of a cleaver.
