We have been told that there is no great scope for dessert in an Italian meal. Pastries and cakes are normally taken with coffee as a snack, and meals traditionally end with cheese and fruit. This accepted wisdom is questionable. Certainly large quantities of pastries are consumed in Italy’s innumerable coffee bars, but recent experience has shown that Italians often opt to finish their meal with a dessert.
