Besides the base, I try to add one or two fun toppings to the salad to make it interesting. This is where you can really go crazy. Cheese is an easy out here, but I try to avoid it, especially if other parts of the dinner involve cheese. Some of my favorite toppings include avocado, slivered almonds, sprouts, apples, cashews, currants, granola, olives, pears, pomegranate seeds, pistachios, and watercress.
