Michael Ryan opened his first restaurant, Range, in Myrtleford, in 2005. After three successful years at this restaurant, including gaining two chef's hat and Country Restaurant of the Year in the Age Good Food Guide, Michael and his winemaker wife Jeanette moved to Beechworth to open Provenance.
Provenance, opened in 2009, has received many accolades and awards in its nine years of operation, including two hats in the Good Food Guide for the last 9 years. The restaurant is currently ranked no. 30 in the Gourmet Traveller Top 100 Australian Restaurants. Michael Ryan was voted Chef of the Year in the Age Good Food Guide in 2013.
