  • 14 oz. plain flour
  • ¼ teasp. salt
  • ½ lb.


Sift together the flour and salt. Put chopped dates (weigh after stoning), sugar, margarine and soda in a mixing bowl and pour the boiling water over, stir thoroughly. Add the egg, flour, walnuts and essence and beat well. Bake in a greased cake-tin or large loaf-tin in a fairly hot oven (400°–350° F., Gas 6–4).
