(Self-raising flour can be used for any of the following, in which case omit the raising agent.)
Sift flour and salt into bowl, cut in fat with round-bladed knife, then rub with fingertips till quite fine. Add sugar and baking-powder. Mix with egg and milk to a stiff consistency. (The fork with which the buns are mixed should stand up in the mixture.) Divide into pieces and form into rocky heaps on a greased baking-sheet. Bake in a hot oven (450 °–425° F., Gas 8–7).
