Method

Slightly warm the syrup, flavour with a pinch of ginger or a little lemon juice, then stir in the breadcrumbs.

Line a 9-in fireproof plate with the pastry, trim and decorate the edge. Spread over the syrup mixture, decorate with cross strips of pastry, and bake in a fairly hot oven (400° F., Gas 6) for about 30 min.
