This simple recipe honours the little island of Burano, in the lagoon of Venice. While the fishermen are at sea, their wives are busy making special embroideries called merletti, which they sell to tourists. Their houses are painted in wild colours, supposedly because when the fishermen have been drinking with friends they are more likely to recognise the colour than the house number!
