I would never have known about this sweet, delicious cake if it had not been for my friend Marta Curro, who brought one back for me after a trip to Portugal. Many Portuguese sweets are made with almonds, and this cake is no exception—it is basically a baked almond paste made with a little bit of egg and flour, similar in spirit to many Sicilian convent sweets. The filling is usually made from a rustic Portuguese squash jam called doce de chila, all but unobtainable outside
