Though the kancha moong dal is such a summer favourite, sometimes my mother would make an equally simple version of masoor dal, lentils. This dal, for some odd reason, is considered non-vegetarian by the Hindus and therefore forbidden to widows. Its usual recipe with onions is more suitable to the cooler temperatures of monsoon and winter, but this particular recipe, somehow, made it past all apprehensions of heat and appeared in summer.
