  • 2 cups (500 ml) low-fat or whole milk
  • 4 tsp unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • ½ lb (250 g) bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped or grated
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Whipped cream for serving (optional)


    In a small saucepan, combine the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar. Place over medium heat and heat, whisking until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is warmed through. Add the chocolate, salt, and cinnamon and whisk vigorously until the mixture is frothy, smooth, and very warm. Pour into coffee cups or mugs. Top with whipped cream, if using, and serve.
