If you thought a trifle oozing with sherry or a Christmas pud doused in brandy was as boozy as a food treat could get, then you’ve obviously never tried a rumtopf. This German and Danish tradition involves the routine filling of a jar with seasonal fruits, sugar and rum throughout the year until a special occasion (usually Christmas) warrants its unveiling. The resulting fruity mélange is a celebration of the year’s harvest, and serves as both dessert and digestif rolled into one.
