Though I’m sure my mom made this dessert only when strawberries were available fresh in the spring, it has always seemed like a winter dessert to me, with the tangy orange juice and the dusting of nutmeg on the pillowy dumplings. It turns out it’s a wonderful way to use frozen whole strawberries. Leftovers are none too pretty (the strawberries lose their color and turn a bit gray), but they are tasty when warmed up.
