Even though gochujang is a Korean condiment, the flavor profile is a cousin to the Chinese doubanjiang (spicy chili bean paste). Both condiments are made of fermented chili peppers and soybeans. Gochujang has the addition of fermented rice, and I think that the rice tones down the soybean flavor and makes it more chili forward. This is my version of gochujang sauce.
