In Good Things in England, Florence White notes this recipe is from a Lady Robinson, who submitted it for White’s 1931 English Folk Cookery Exhibition. In the note that accompanied the entry, Lady Robinson explained that the recipe actually came from an elderly lady who served the cake along with a glass of cherry brandy to friends who visited her every year between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
