This is one of the great national Dutch cakes or “sweet” breads. The best are made at Deventer by the famous firm of Verkade, and can be bought in England at certain shops.
Mix all the dry ingredients in a basin. Mix the syrup and the milk, and add gradually to the dry ingredients, working into a firm dough. This should be done somewhat quickly.
