Melt half the bacon dripping or butter in a frying pan and cook the onion until soft and just beginning to brown.
Boil the potatoes for 7 minutes or until half cooked. Grate, while still hot, into a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and add the egg, cooked onion and fat.
Melt the rest of the bacon dripping in the frying pan and in it cook large tablespoons of the potato mixture,
