The English term “shrub” has been used since the fifteenth century to refer to mixed drinks usually made with a vinegar syrup and fruit juice. It comes from the Persian word “sharbat” which itself comes from the Arabic “sharab” meaning “drink.” In recent times both the drinks and the term for it have come back into vogue, not only in the U.K. and U.S., but in Iran as well.
