Spicy pickled lemons are generally associated with Morocco, but they are popular in southern Iran as well. The story of the lemon and lime is an interesting one. The lemon probably originated somewhere in northern India and is thought to be a hybrid of the sour orange/narenj and the citron/toranj (Citrus medica) not the lime. The Persian lime/limu shirazi is the large lime we are used to today (C. Iatifolia). It is a cross between the lemon and the key lime. Key
