A cassata cake is synonymous with Sicily. In this slightly simplified version, delicate layers of Italian sponge cake are soaked in rum, topped with decadent ricotta frosting, and decorated with colorful candied fruits, providing a feast of textures and colors for the senses. Usually, a decorative layer of marzipan is placed around the cake, but Nonna Lilliana prefers to leave it out, cutting down on the sweetness and the time it takes to make. Since their retirement
