Nonna Romana Sciddurlo’s Taralli of Saint Lucy

Occhi di Santa Lucia are tiny, sweet taralli from Puglia made throughout the month of December, especially to celebrate Saint Lucy’s Day on December 13. They are coated with a sugar glaze that Nonna Romana refers to as u gilepp, which gives them a white sugar finish as they dry. Santa Lucia is the patron saint of the blind, her name being a derivative of the word for light. She is often depicted holding a plate with eyes on it and a palm branch that symbolizes
