This Chinese-influenced recipe mingles star anise and five-spice powder with other Eastern and Western ingredients to create sweet-and-spicy comfort food perfect for a cold night. Although the cooking is mostly hands-off, you’ll need to plan ahead, as the meat marinates for several hours and needs a couple of hours in the oven.
Arrange ribs in a single layer in a nonreactive dish. In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sherry, honey, sesame oil, ginger, five-spice powder, mustard, star anise, garlic, and chile. Pour over ribs and turn to coat well. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for at least 4 hours or up to overnight.
Remove ribs from refrigerator and bring to room temperature.
