  1. Put the ingredients for the syrup-the water, sugar and vanilla-pod into a saucepan. Bring to the boil.
  2. Peel and core the pears, rub them with the half lemon and cut them in quarters. Cook them in the syrup for 15 minutes, and then drain in a colander.
