We have topped multi-coloured cakes with swirls of multi-coloured icing and a dusting of edible glitter — a little bit of gold at the end of the rainbow. Getting the rainbow piping effect right can be a bit fiddly, and we have allowed a little more buttercream than usual given that some will inevitably get wasted along the way, but the effect is well worth the effort.
