The old tale goes that when a boat-load of Parsees — the Zoroastrian Persians who fled from the invasion of Islam — arrived at the shores of Gujarat in AD 745, they sent emissaries to the King of Surat requesting permission to land and settle in the country. The emissaries returned bearing a full glass of milk, to indicate that the land was rich but already thickly populated.
