In 1943 we undertook a marathon train journey down the entire length of India. The “we” consisted of my mother, my English nanny, two brindle Great Danes, one liver-roan cocker spaniel, one Muslim bearer, twenty-seven pieces of assorted luggage and one small girl. And the reason for this trek was that we were leaving the Punjab and joining my father, who had come back to India from Burma and was taking up a staff job in Southern Command, in Bangalore.
