I learnt about this dish from a Japanese friend who used to stay in New Zealand. Initially sceptical about this recipe, I was amazed that it actually works! You can substitute salmon with ham if you like.

Ingredients

  • Yellow onion 1, peeled and both ends trimmed
  • Fresh lemon juice 1 tsp
  • Salt a

Method

  1. Mix all sauce ingredients together. Set aside.
  2. Slice onion very thinly and parallel to the lines so that you get thin strips. Soak onion strips in water for 10 minutes. Drain and pat dry.
  3. Mix lemon juice and salt, then stir into rice and scatter sesame seeds over.
