STARTER: Measure into a bowl ½ cup lukewarm water and sprinkle 1 package of yeast. Stir until the yeast is dissolved and add 2 cups of lukewarm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 tablespoon salt, and 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour. Mix well. Cover the bowl loosely (with a saucer or plate) and let it stand for 3 or 4 days at room temperature, stirring the mixture down each day.
