It is very challenging to wait until these rich cups are well chilled and firm before dipping a spoon into the center for a taste. If dark chocolate is too intense, substitute semisweet for a milder flavor. This version goes straight from saucepan to fridge (others are baked in a water bath), making it more like a super-rich pudding.
Combine milk, cream, sugar, and salt in a medium-size saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 to 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves and mixture is hot but not boiling.
