A typical beach day in Alexandria involves lots of swimming, socializing and snacking. Young boys selling sea urchin, clams and wafer snacks on styrofoam platters comb the beaches yelling “Ritza! Gandofli! Fresca!” In the past, Montazah kids would dive for sea urchins, then cut them open and eat them raw. Crab (kaboria) is another popular dish, with Mediterranean blue crab sold all over the coast and prepared simply using local spices.
