Hawawshi, the hugely popular street food, combines meat, onions, peppers and spices that are then grilled or baked in baladi flat bread. Whether Hawawshi was named after a butcher by the same name in Cairo in the 1970s, or traced back to Alexandria when leftover meat and bread were blended into a local smash burger, the result is an Egyptian favourite lauded by Liverpool footballer, Mohamed Salah, in a Pepsi advert about Alexandrian street food.
