This South Indian-style Tomato Chutney is a bold and tangy condiment made with ripe tomatoes, garlic, red chiles, and a tempered spice mix. It’s my favorite chutney to serve with dosas, idlis, and even parathas for an extra kick of flavor!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil, divided
  • ½ cup pearl onions, coarsely chopped
  • 4

Method

Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a small pan; add the onions and sauté until soft and tender. Add the chopped tomatoes, green chile, turmeric powder, and salt, to taste. Sauté until the tomatoes are nice and soft and almost all the water has evaporated, about 15 minutes. Let the chutney mixture cool, add to a mixer grinder jar or blend, then grind into a smooth paste.
