Put the onions and the melted butter into a saucepan. Stir over a low heat until the vegetables are coated with the butter. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook very slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and the liquid is completely reduced (about 20 minutes).
Serve as an accompaniment to roast beef or chicken.
