The strawberries pictured in medieval mosaics are the small, wild woodland strawberries or fraises des bois, which are sweet and scented, their flavour best when freshly picked. The diminutive alpine strawberries, bright red in colour, are much harder to come by but well worth the hunt. Their flavour is quite intense.
