Sweet tamarind jamu

This delicious drink reminds me of a homemade cola and is particularly good over ice.


  • 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
  • thumb of turmeric, skin scrubbed, chopped
  • 3 lime leaves
  • 1 pandan leaf, bruised and tied in a knot
  • 50 g (ΒΌ cup) dark palm sugar (gula jawa)


Put all the ingredients in a pan with 750 ml (3 cups) water and a pinch of salt (adjust the tamarind amount depending on how sour your variety is and how sour you’d like your drink). Cover, bring to the boil slowly over a low heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the infused liquid and serve either hot or ice cold.
