Now here’s some useless but interesting information. Macadamia nuts were originally discovered by an Australian chemist, one J. Macadam (get it?), in 1865. A couple of entrepreneurial Americans took a bunch of small trees back to Hawaii, invented a commercial nut-cracking machine, and made a fortune. If you don’t have any of these hard-shelled miniature cannon balls (actually, you can buy them ready-shelled) in your larder, use brazils, almonds or walnuts instead.
