Balsam apples (Barelaa) are a late summer vegetable that measure between 1 to 2 inches long. They are slightly curved at one end with a soft, delicate texture. This pale green juicy fruit is a relative of bitter melon. Balsam apples are cooked only when young and tender and still green. Since this vegetable is delicate, it cooks quickly.
