This was one of my favorite childhood dishes. It’s interesting that noodles were first taken from Iran to Sicily by the Arabs around the 10th to 11th century and came back to Iran as macaroni. The Sicilians have a baked pasta dish that is very similar to this one. No one knows why in Iran pasta is called makaroni but what we know is that macaroni in Italy refers to a dry pasta shaped like narrow tubes and made with durum wheat.
