In his book Acetaria: A Discourse of Sallets (1699) John Evelyn notes that German housewives sprinkle their salads with honey and saffron although he admits that the English ‘little encourage its admittance into our sallets.’ I think it makes a rather charming addition to a humble vinaigrette.
