This cocoa cake, without a gram of chocolate, is a relic of past times when a chocolate bar was too luxurious to afford. It isn’t a fudgy, dense brownie, but a moist pound cake, perfect for evening tea or even a sweet supper. My mom used to make it for me after a long day of school. She dusted warm cocoa slices with powdered sugar, and I ate a lot of them. Nowadays, I like to stir a few chile flakes into the batter for a little punch.
