Making your own baked beans at home is easier than you think. Use a tin or carton of cooked cannellini beans and in less than 15 minutes you will have a healthy beans-on-toast breakfast with a lot less sugar and salt than shop-bought baked beans.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat and add the chopped shallot. Fry for about 2 minutes until the onion has softened, then add the crushed garlic and fry for a further minute.
  2. Add the passata, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce, honey, smoked paprika and dried herbs and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
