I had spent a considerable amount of the morning writing about food, simplicity and my ongoing quest to remove stages and sometimes ingredients from recipes, as I am increasingly fond of stripped-down cooking, then I went on a walk up Portobello Road in London, bought some particularly good-looking sardines and this is what happened when I got home.
