I am very discourteous in referring to Madame Mader as ‘another neighbour’. We count the Mader family among our best French friends. During the latter part of the Second World War when the German Occupation was extended to southern France, Paul Mader was conscripted to serve in the army in Normandy, i.e. to fight the Allies. This he refused to do, fleeing his home and living rough with the Maquis in the chestnut woods round Carmaux for two years.
