Rye whiskey is the original spirit used to make this classic cocktail, one of my favorites in the cooler months of the year. A cousin of bourbon, rye is made with more rye than corn, which gives it a slightly spicy flavor. You can use bourbon instead, if you prefer.

I’ve always liked my Manhattans “perfect,” meaning both dry and sweet vermouths are used, whereas traditionally only sweet vermouth is added. You’ll have enough spiced cherries here for a second batch of Manhattans. Note
