Unlike the sweet piquillo peppers that arrived in Navarra during the Colombian Exchange, smaller green peppers were brought to Padrón, Galicia, by Franciscan monks a century later. Speculative, but perhaps they embraced the mystery of the fruit’s sometimes sweet and sometimes quite spicy character. A little surprising thrill for this monastic bunch.
