Recently I went on a walk in the Amsterdam park Geuzenbos with city ecologist Geert Timmermans. It’s a beautifully wild nature reserve on which he keeps a close eye: “Look over there, brooding common terns! I’m trying my best to keep them here; hopefully their population here will increase.” Or he points out the composition of the soil in this reclaimed land, which leads to an ever-changing vegetation: “Look over here, where the soil suddenly turns sandy you find sea buckthorn everywhere.”
