Coffee traditionally brings the morning meal to a close. It is a ritual that has been firmly anchored in the everyday life of Turks since its arrival in Constantinople at the beginning of the sixteenth century and the opening of the first cafés – Europe followed suit later. Until the beginning of the twentieth century, coffee was the most popular beverage across the Ottoman Empire, before the cultivation of tea in the young Turkish republic led to tea taking its place.
