My family created this dish many years ago for Rosh Hashanah as it contains pomegranate, the deep-coloured Biblical fruit that is a symbol of abundance, procreation and prosperity. In the early autumn, pomegranates may be a little sour, so we sometimes sweeten the dish with honey, another symbol of good things for the Jewish New Year.
